
About me
My name is Doris Kakuru (she/her). I was born and raised in Uganda. I am an occupier on the land of the WSÁNEĆ people in Victoria, BC. I am an interdisciplinary social scientist, and my work is in the broad area of children’s geographies.
My community-based participatory research program is anchored in interpretivism, critical child and youth empowerment, critical childhood studies, critical race theories, and decoloniality.
The key areas of my research interest are :
- Violence in childhood
- Gendered children’s rights
- Adolescent sexual health and sexuality education
- Children and youth in urban poverty
- Child labour
- The social context of education (teaching and learning)
- Children and youth affected by HIV and AIDS
