My name is Doris Kakuru (she/her). I was born and raised in Uganda. I am an occupier on the land of the WSÁNEĆ people in Victoria, BC. I am an interdisciplinary social scientist, and my work is in the broad area of children’s geographies. My community-based participatory research program is anchored in interpretivism, critical child and youth empowerment, critical childhood studies, critical race theories, and decoloniality. The key areas of my research interest are:

  • violence in childhood

  • gendered children’s rights

  • adolescent sexual health and sexuality education

  • children and youth in urban poverty

  • child labour

  • the social context of education (teaching and learning)

  • children and youth affected by HIV and AIDs
